DANCES OF DEATH
AND LIGHT

DEC 1 - 4, 2016

Newhart Family Theatre

Dances of Death and Light inaugurates a new era of Loyola Dance, as the annual dance concert moves to the Newhart Family Theatre, uniting the Dance and Theatre programs under one roof-- the roof of the Mundelein Center, the home to arts at Loyola.

This concert grapples with the dual nature of man. While able to create sublime works of grace through dedication, mankind is also capable of causing terrible cruelty and suffering. Dances of Death and Light features the luminous classical ballet, Paquita, composed by Marius Petipa in 1841 and the iconic Lynchtown, by Charles Weidman from 1936, based on his witness of a lynching as a boy. Additional choreography for the program includes works by Sarah Cullen Fuller and a premiere by guest artist, Brian McGinnis featuring the strenght of community found in dancing together.

Participating in the Department of Fine and Performing Arts theme for 2016/17, "Response to Violence", this concert calls for the hope of beauty in redemption for evil.
