Statement

This project serves as a culmination of all of the design skills I learned in my time at Loyola University Chicago. I created a new brand identity for the city of Melbourne, Australia that sought to reflect the vibrant personality in the city through its new iconography. The project is human-centered as I thought of ways to display all the needed information in an expressive manner, indicative of the people that live in the city. Through this project I got to show my skills as a designer, and I gained valuable information on the principles of designing in a setting like city streets, parks and offices. The piece is also a testament to how much I grew as a designer in my time at Loyola University Chicago, as the project was a complete change of ideas and mediums because of COVID-19 hindering my ability to get the resources I needed to complete my initial idea of a six foot tall sculpture.

Bio

Patrick Reiley is a designer and artist and was born and raised in Indianapolis, Indiana. Growing up Patrick was interested in sports and music, which he saw as spaces where a group of people could come together to form something greater than the sum of its parts. This is a philosophy Patrick has begun adapting into his works in design and sculpture to try and immerse the viewer into the piece, and make it as accessible as possible. He typically works through illustration, and sculpture to create artworks that demonstrate texture through mark making, as well as mixed medias coming together to give an organic object a texture that complements or contrasts the object itself. His interest in learning as much as possible about the arts influences the way that he tries to emphasize the process of creating art because he feels the need to create beautiful things, rather than portray complex meaning behind his artwork. Patrick has focused on making art more accessible in his recent years at Loyola University Chicago by incorporating more than just sight into his design and fine art practices. His work often makes the audience want to interact with it through physically touching it, and by creating an immersion through sound. After graduation, Patrick plans on working in the design field as a UI/UX Designer building websites, and working in sculpture through a studio in his free time. Eventually he would like to open his own business whether it be a design studio that he owns and operates, or a gallery space that he funds to showcase artwork, and get the community to engage with the arts on a more frequent basis.
